Prime TV Picks: Seven Must-Watch Films This Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary examines the tyranny of female beauty along with the perceived horrors of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers a brilliant portrayal playing Elisabeth, a mature film star demoted to hosting a workout series on TV. Pushed out thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and horrifying procedure known as the Substance. This creates a youthful duplicate named Sue, resulting in a progressively parasitic dynamic among both women. October 17th, Paramount Plus

This Mystery Thriller

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery features Knightley playing Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a break from covering global conflict to join an opulent ship with an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her partner, as well as other affluent passengers. Yet once an enigmatic female goes overboard one night and everyone insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Available now, Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director challenges his film-making abilities through this innovative ghostly tale filmed completely from the perspective of the phantom. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like defensive toward her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor embraces his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He plays an egotistical celebrity playing himself who agrees to a lucrative offer to visit a birthday party in Mallorca for the wealthy superfan Javi. Hired by government spies to investigate the potential kingpin, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. Saturday 11 October, prime time, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well even without a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the local kids on edge. Once Finney is taken by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line in the room continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the battle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic regarding the shamed religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals begin monetising the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, yet the lead actress achieves to show the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, late night, on Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This period's another release from Steven Soderbergh presents a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars used by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission to discover a mole inside the organization from a group of five – among them is his spouse. Each performer are masters of understated style, so a delicious psychological game of deception or honesty unfolds. The supporting cast join in the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
