Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
